[JJC has been in operation since 1901](https://jjc.edu/about-jjc/history), and as the very first community college in the U.S., there's nearly 120 years of history in its grasp. Want to take a stroll down memory lane? Keep scrolling for seven interesting snip-its from the past, discovered in JJC yearbooks and other archives. **![world war i 7 interesting photos discovered in jjc yearbooks joliet junior college parade red cross](https://blog.jjc.edu/hs-fs/hubfs/world%20war%20i.jpg?width=400&name=world%20war%20i.jpg) 1. JJC Students Raising Funds for WWI in a Local Parade, 1917** This photo, found on [page 25](https://archive.org/details/jolietjuniorcoll00robe/page/24) of Robert Sterling's *Joliet Junior College: A Pictorial History of America's Oldest Public Community College,* shows a group of JJC students in a parade as volunteers for the Red Cross. During the event, they collected and raised money for the organization during World War I.  **![the fire place bridge 7 interesting photos discovered in jjc yearbooks joliet junior college](https://blog.jjc.edu/hs-fs/hubfs/the%20fire%20place.png?width=400&name=the%20fire%20place.png) 2. Fireplace on the Bridge, 1976** Did you know that there used to be a fireplace on the Bridge? This photo was taken during the [1976-1977 school year](https://archive.org/details/shield1977joli/page/n3). The yearbook staff nicknamed this school year the "Year of Awareness."    **![womens basketball team 7 interesting photos discovered in jjc yearbooks joliet junior college](https://blog.jjc.edu/hs-fs/hubfs/Blog_Images/01-_1909_womens_basketball_team.jpg?width=400&name=01-_1909_womens_basketball_team.jpg) 3. Women's Basketball Team, 1910** Can you imagine playing in those uniforms? The [1911 yearbook](https://archive.org/details/jollier1910joli/page/n161) states that this close-knit group of young women played basketball together from the time they were freshmen in high school up until their final year at JJC - and they were *good*. Though we have to suspect the game was played a little differently back then - in the last game of the year, they won against the Joliet High School senior girls with a score of 12-5. **![wiley of the 70s 60s 7 interesting photos discovered in jjc yearbooks joliet junior college](https://blog.jjc.edu/hs-fs/hubfs/Blog_Images/wiley%20of%20the%2050s%2060s.jpg?width=251&name=wiley%20of%20the%2050s%2060s.jpg) ![wiley wolf 90s 7 interesting photos discovered in jjc yearbooks joliet junior college](https://blog.jjc.edu/hs-fs/hubfs/Blog_Images/wiley%20wolf%2090s.jpg?width=400&name=wiley%20wolf%2090s.jpg) 4. Wiley Wolf of the '60s and '70s; Wiley Wolf of the '90s ** Wiley Wolf has changed a lot throughout the years - from [a checkerboard printed wolf](https://archive.org/details/jolietjuniorcoll00robe/page/106) in the 1960s and 1970s to the [leaner and more pronounced mascot](https://archive.org/details/jolietjuniorcoll00robe/page/204) in the 1990s. Many of them studied in the [Agricultural Sciences Department](https://jjc.edu/academics/agriculture-sciences). According to the [1931 yearbook](https://archive.org/details/thej1931joli/page/n199), the group of women took many rides in Pilcher Park. Dorothy Westendarp was the faculty advisor for both groups. **![1975 ski club 7 interesting photos discovered in jjc yearbooks joliet junior college](https://blog.jjc.edu/hs-fs/hubfs/Blog_Images/1975%20ski%20club.jpg?width=400&name=1975%20ski%20club.jpg) 7. Ski Club, 1975** JJC's ski club was founded in 1969 and became very popular for its time. This photo, taken from the [1975 yearbook](https://archive.org/details/shield1975joli/page/76), only shows seven of the club's 70 members for that year. JJC's ski club was very active, having visited ski resorts in Aspen, Colorado; Boyne, Michigan; and Devilshead, Wisconsin in 1975.  **Want to See More?** Visit [Archive.org/details/jolietjuniorcollegelibrary](https://archive.org/details/jolietjuniorcollegelibrary) or check out our post about [JJC's 115th anniversary](https://blog.jjc.edu/celebrate-jjcs-115-anniversary-through-photos) to discover even more unique photos from the past.
